Bread should be a pleasure — something that feels good to eat, both in the moment and afterwards. But for many of us with gluten sensitivity or gut issues, it often becomes something we have to avoid, tolerate, or compromise on.

Here at The Happy Gut Bakery, our loaves are naturally gluten-free, and made from real ingredients that nourish rather than inflame.

Why Go Gluten-Free?

If you’ve ever been told to cut out gluten,  or discovered that bread just doesn’t sit right with your body,  you’re not alone.

Whether you’re living with coeliac disease, managing a sensitive gut, or simply aiming to feel better through food, choosing gluten-free bread can be a small but powerful step toward feeling well again.

What Is Gluten?

Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley and rye. It gives bread its stretch and bounce — but for some people, it can also trigger inflammation, bloating, stomach discomfort, and longer-term digestive issues.

Why Do People Avoid Gluten?

There are several reasons why people choose a gluten-free diet:

  • Coeliac Disease – A serious autoimmune condition where even small amounts of gluten damage the gut lining.
  • Non-Coeliac Gluten Sensitivity – You may not have a diagnosis, but gluten can still cause symptoms like bloating, fatigue, brain fog or skin issues.
  • General Gut Health – Many people reduce gluten as part of a gut-healing or anti-inflammatory diet.

Some avoid gluten short-term, others for life — but nearly everyone who does so wants food that feels comforting, not restrictive.

Are The Happy Gut Bakery Gluten-Free Bread and Bakes Suitable for Coeliacs?

We use only gluten-free certified flours, most of which are also organic. We also use other ingredients that are naturally gluten-free, such as coconut sugar, salt and maple syrup for example. These don't have the gluten free symbol on the packaging, so we cannot guarantee there has never been any gluten cross contamination in their production.  Our kitchen is also strictly gluten-free to avoid any cross contamination.

All of the ingredients in our bread and bakes will be listed for each product on our website. This will help guide you as to whether you feel confident that you will not be triggered by any of the other non GF certified ingredients in the bakes that could have been exposed to cross contamination.

Is Gluten-Free Bread Better for You?

It depends on the bread. Not all gluten-free bread is equal.

Most gluten-free bread on supermarket shelves is ultra-processed. It often contains lots of preservatives, and cheap fillers to mimic the texture of wheat — but falls way short on both flavour and nutrition.  If you have a sensitive gut, the last thing you need is hidden nasties waiting to trigger your symptoms.

At The Happy Gut Bakery, I do things differently. My gluten-free bakes are:

  • Made from naturally gluten-free flours like buckwheat, brown rice, sorghum, millet and teff
  • High in fibre, nutrients and natural flavour
  • Free from additives and artificial preservatives
  • Baked in small batches by hand

It’s not just bread you can tolerate — it’s bread you can actually enjoy and feel good about eating. Ultimately satisfying and comforting. Like bread should make you feel.

More Questions About Gluten-Free Bread..

Will gluten-free bread help with bloating?
Many people with gut sensitivity find that cutting out gluten — especially processed gluten — reduces bloating and discomfort.

Why is supermarket gluten-free bread so disappointing?
Mass-produced GF bread often lacks flavour, structure, and nutrition. It’s made to last on shelves, not to nourish. I focus on quality, taste, nutrition and ingredients that truly support gut health.
